Vaccine Guidelines
The Shifting Landscape of Vaccine Recommendations
Due to an erosion in trust with the Centers for Disease Control, states have begun issuing their own guidelines and rules. The Western states of Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, and California have joined to create the West Coast Health Alliance (WCHA) and California has enacted a new law to base the state’s immunization guidance on independent medical organizations, rather than the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Northeast Public Health Collaborative (NPHC) composed of Maryland, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont andNew York City has also been formed to independently evaluate vaccine recommendations.

Independent Medical Organization Vaccine Recommendations
American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP): This organization of pediatricians publishes its own evidence-based immunization schedules for children. For example, in August 2025, the AAP released its immunization schedule and urged insurers to cover all recommended vaccines.
American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP): The AAFP is a medical organization that is heavily involved in the vaccine recommendation process. It is represented on the federal ACIP panel and provides expert feedback.
American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG): Represented on the federal ACIP panel, ACOG contributes its perspective on vaccination relevant to women’s health. For example, in September 2025, ACOG reaffirmed its recommendation for all pregnant and breastfeeding women to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID): The NFID provides educational resources on infectious diseases and promotes the use of immunizations. It highlights the importance of vaccination to prevent diseases.
